The official beginning of spring is just weeks away. The warmer weather makes us want to come out of hibernation and get back into the gym to get our bodies beach ready. It’s no secret that working out + sweat is the perfect equation for some funky workout gear. You wash your exercise clothes after each session, but how often do you wash your sneakers? All that sweat and dirt can cause them to become stinky, but don’t worry! Did you know that you can clean your sneakers in the washing machine? Here’s how:

Step 1 — remove any excess dirt 

If you wear your shoes a lot when running outside, your sneakers might be especially filthy. Run-ins with mud, snow, and de-icing salt might still show some evidence of the encounter on your shoes. Take a dry scrub brush or a clean rag and brush the dirt off as well as possible before washing. You could also take them outside and bang them together to remove any excess dirt.

Step 2 — take out the laces

Removing your laces is a very important step. You want to make sure your laces get as clean as possible from any hidden dirt in the eyelets and you also don’t want to let your laces get caught in the agitator during the spin cycle. Step 5 — air dry

After your wash cycle, it’s key to let your sneakers air dry. The spin cycle in the washer will have removed all of the excess water so your shoes should only be damp. Place them outside, next to an open window, or in front of a fan to speed up the drying process. When they’re completely dry, reassemble them, and show them off. They’ll look good as new!

Fur 

A real fur coat is made from animal hair and fibers, and should only be cleaned by a professional. Because the hair is real, it has to be maintained in order to not dry out or break. You always have to hang you fur coat up on a hanger in a fur garment bag, in order to keep it from drying out.

Leather

Like with fur coats, authentic leather coats need extra care. If you notice a stain, you should spot clean it with a damp paper towel, and then wipe it away – that usually does the trick. Another option is to buy a leather stain removal spray, if you don’t believe that just using water will work. You can also put your leather coat in the washing machine, even though it’s not entirely recommended. If you choose to clean it that way, remember to zip up the coat, turn it inside out and wash it with cold water to then dry it for ten minutes on low heat.

Wool

Woolen coats are made from a natural fiber, typically goat or sheep hair, and can keep you extremely warm. You can wash a wool coat with cool water on a gentle wool wash setting that’s shown on your washing machine, but the best way is to dry clean it. Wool is a machine washable material, but the extra padding added to it, is not. So if machine-washed, you might risk that these paddings fall apart and dissolve in the water, ultimately ruining the coat.

Fleece

A synthetic coat, such as a fleece, should be washed in either warm or cold water on the permanent press cycle. After the wash, it should hang outside to dry. If that is not possible, you can dry it by setting your dryer to tumble on low heat. Something important to remember is to never dry a fleece on high heat, since that might cause it to shrink.

Anorak

A waterproof coat should never be washed with normal laundry detergent, as it can break down the alignment of the coat fibers, messing up the coating that makes it waterproof. If you need to wash your Anorak, there are specific waterproof soaps you should use. Wash the coat on cold for thirty minutes, and then air-dry it or tumble on low heat in the dryer.

The first trick to try out is simply using regular laundry detergent. Apply some liquid detergent to the grease stain, and rub it gently. Always check the washing instructions for the item, and then wash it on the hottest setting appropriate for that specific fabric. Make sure that the stain is completely gone before you dry the item, and if not, repeat the stain removal process. If that doesn’t work, try the next technique.

1. Allow your towel time to dry from use before washing it. Whether hungoutside on a clothesline or draped it over a chair, a dry towel is much easier to manage than a wet one.

2. Shake off your towel thoroughly to make sure it is free of sand before putting it in the washer. Sand can be damaging to beach towels, as it may become engrained in the towel during wash, giving the towel a rough and rigid texture. This would not only make your towel look dirty, but disrupt its water-absorbing properties as well.

3. Next, try soaking your towel in vinegar, in order to get rid of any sand that wasn’t shaken off. Allow these towels to soak in a washer filled with the vinegar and hot water for about an hour, before running a normal hot cycle. The vinegar should kill any bacteria on the towel just as well as detergent.

4. If you want to run another cycle after the vinegar, be sure to not use fabric softener, as this causes towels to become less absorbent. Sort by color, avoid overloading the washer, and dry thoroughly. Drying beach towels on a clothesline may result in some stiffness. For the optimal softness, use a tumble dryer.

  • Sand can easily be trapped in between the fibers of the swimsuit causing discoloration and a lot of discomfort.
  • High temperatures can have a dangerous effect on Spandex and Lycra, normally the most common fabrics for swimsuits.

  • Chlorine is very dangerous for synthetic and polyester fabrics and can possibly break down a suit’s elasticity.

• Lay out or hang dry in a shady spot, since sunlight can endanger your swimsuit.
• Lastly, experts recommend to have more than one swimsuit in order to let them rest between wearings, thus helping the Lycra/Spandex yarn regain its memory shape.

Grass Stains
With summer sports teams, landscaping maintenance and any fun family or friend outdoor activities, grass stains are by far the most plaguing stain of the summer season. Before washing, create an equal mix of water and vinegar to gently rub out the stain. A pre-treat detergent can be used to finish off any spots the mixture missed.

Mud Stains
Life isn’t about learning for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain… and then learning how to remove the mud stains. Fortunately, the last part only requires pre-treat with detergent and soak in cold water for a half hour or until the stain is removed. Then wash like normal.

Bicycle Grease
These months are perfect for a morning or evening bike ride around the neighborhood, or even a mountain biking adventure. If you end up stained and greased up, use dish soap to work the stain, then once it’s removed, wash like you typically do.

Sweat Stains
Use an equal mix of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and water. Rub the solution on the stains and allow the mixture to sit for about a half hour. Before you wash how you typically would, use a toothbrush or stiff brush to remove any residue.
